Interview with Mikhail Dunakovsiy from December 28, 2022

─ Tell me where you're from and what you do.
"I'm from Zaporozhye, an illustrator of children's books".
─ How did your story as an artist begin?
"It's unclear how) Once upon a time got on one of the freelance exchanges and started trying something there. Moreover, it was not drawing, because at that time there was no skill. These were site designs, some kind of animation, collages. And then I got into game projects and it already directed me to the true path. For several years I drew icons and the like, over time I began to study illustration, characters and thus came to children's illustration".
─ What do you usually draw on?
"XP-Pen Artist 15.6 Pro. Before that there was a Wacom Intuos. And then some Genius who cost like a sandwich:)".
─ Is inspiration important to you, or is it redundant?
"Yes, all these creative attributes have the greatest influence on me. Conditions, mood, silence and all that are needed. That's why I don't like my neighbors and sometimes I don't like anyone at all)".
─ What artists inspire you?
"Oh, I subscribe to a lot, from digital to classical. I stick to one, then to another. It is difficult to single out someone like that right away. For example, this is Matt Dixon, a cool uncle who draws very atmospheric sad illustrations with funny works. James Gurney is classics, dinosaurs and academic school. There are a lot of cool children's illustrators".
─ How did you remember February 24, 2022?
"Terrible. Call at 5 in the morning: "─ It's started. ─ What? ─ War!". Gas station, shop. Anxious backpack. News. And some kind of shock all day. Although on the 24th we still did not fully realize what it was. In the evening, they even went for a walk to see where the shelter was. But from the next day ─ searching for products, water, filler for the cat pot) And it's constantly scary. That rockets will fly now. That a rocket will fly into your house. That tanks will enter the city. That enemy soldiers will come. That's how I remember it".
─ What exactly did the war change in your life?
"Well, it changed your life. All of us. We will probably never be able to live like before. Never again will we believe that peace is forever. That the wars have already remained somewhere there. What cannot happen in the modern civilized world, that a rocket can fall on your house. You know how we laughed at our grandparents who saved and valued a piece of bread. That's how we will be. Sometimes I am attacked by lofty philosophical thoughts - maybe humanity is superfluous on this planet? In the Chernobyl exclusion zone, nature blossomed and healed without people. Maybe our planet would become healthy and clean without us?"
─ What will you do when you hear the word "Victory!"?
"Do you remember Serdyuchka's song "Vodka"? This is me then)".
─ If today you were offered to change one thing: anything, what exactly would you change?
"If fantasy movies are to be believed, any change to the past has bad consequences consequences) In one of the "Twilight Zone" series, a girl is sent to the past to become a housewife in Hitler's family and eliminate his child. But she can't do it and therefore replaces him not with the child of a beggar gypsy woman. At the end of the series, we are made to understand that this child himself will become the dictator himself. Like this".

─ Я з Запоріжжя, ілюстратор дитячих книжок.
─ З чого почалася ваша історія митця?
─ Незрозуміло як) Колись випадково потрапив на одну з фриланс бірж і почав там щось пробувати. При чому це було не малювання, тому що скілл на той час був ніякий. То були дизайни сайтів, якась анімація, колажі. А потім потрапив на ігрові проекти і це вже направило мене на істиний шлях. Кілька років малював іконки і тому подібне, з часом почав вивчати ілюстрацію, персонажів і так прийшов до дитячої ілюстрації.
─ На чому ви зазвичай малюєте?
─ XP-Pen Artist 15.6 Pro. До того був Wacom Intuos. А до того якійсь Genius, який коштував, як бутерброд:)
─ Чи важливо для вас натхнення, чи це зайве?
─ Так, всі ці творчі атрибути на мене максимально впливають. Потрібні умови, настрій, тиша і все таке. Тому я не люблю сусідів, а інколи взагалі нікого не люблю)
─ Які митці вас надихають?
─ О, я багато на кого підписан, від цифрових до класичних. Заліпаю то на одного, то на іншого. Складно когось так одразу виділити. Наприклад ─ це Matt Dixon, крутий дядько, що малює дуже атмосферні сумні ілюстрації з кумедними роботами. James Gurney ─ це класика, динозаври і академічна школа. Дуже багато класних дитячих ілюстраторів і ілюстраторок.
─ Яким ви запам'ятали 24.02.2022?
─ Страшним. Дзвінок о 5-й ранку: "─ Почалося. ─ Що? ─ Війна!". Заправка, магазин. Тривожний рюкзак. Новини. І якійсь шоковий стан увесь день. Хоча 24-го ми ще повністю не усвідомлювали, що це. Ввечері навіть пішли прогулятися, подивитися, де укриття. А ось з наступного дня ─ пошуки продуктів, води, наповнювача для котячого горшка) І постійно страшно. Що зараз політять ракети. Що ракета прилетить в твій будинок. Що в місто зайдуть танки. Що прийдуть ворожі солдати. Ось так я це пам'ятаю.
─ Що саме війна змінила у вашому житті?
─ Ну, вона змінила саме життя. Всіх нас. Вже ніколи, мабуть, ми не зможемо жити, як раніше. Вже ніколи не будемо вірити, що мир ─ це назавжди. Що війни вже залишились десь там. Що не може бути у сучасному цивілізованому світі, що на твій дім може впасти ракета. Знаєте, як ми сміялися з наших бабусь і дідусів, що економили і цінували шматок хліба. Ось такими будемо і ми. Інколи на мене нападають високі філософські думки ─ а може людство зайве на цій планеті? У чорнобильській зоні відчуження природа розквітла і зажила без людей. То може і наша планета стала б здоровою і чистою без нас?
─ Що будете робити, коли почуєте слово "Перемога!"?
─ А пам'ятаєте пісню Сердючки "Горілка"? Оце я тоді)
─ Якщо б сьогодні вам запропонували змінити одну річ: будь-що, — то що саме ви б змінили?
─ Якщо вірити фантастичним фільмам, будь яка зміна минулого має погані наслідки) В одній із серій "Сутінкової зони" в минуле відправляють дівчину, що повинна влаштуватися хатньою господаркою у родину Гітлера і ліквідувати його малого. Але вона не може це зробити і тому підмінює його не дитину циганки-жебрачки. В кінці серії нам дають зрозуміти, що сам ця дитина і стане тим самим диктатором. Ось так)
